Another successful event for Toronto’s imagineNATIVE film festival

We are thrilled to tell you about our recent collaboration with Toronto’s imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival. We were approached by organizers in advance of the 2019 festival to help with a very special custom silk scarf project featuring the artwork of renowned filmmaker, singer, artist and activist – Alanis Obomsawin. In October, the imagineNATIVE Festival celebrated its 20th Annual showcase of original Indigenous film and media arts.

A Very Successful Collaboration with Monsoon

Monsoon Corporate Gifts is always thrilled to be involved in the creation of unique items that help to celebrate special events and commemorate significant milestones. During this important 20th annual charity event, Monsoon worked with organizers in the creation of a selection of beautiful quality silk scarves featuring the creative artwork of multi-disciplinary artist Alanis Obomsawin. We are so very pleased with our collaboration on this beautiful limited edition scarf project and we look forward to any opportunity to work with this important and innovative organization in the future. It inspires us to see how much our valued customers appreciate our attention to detail and commitment to quality.

About the imagineNATIVE Film Festival

Regarded as one of the most important Indigenous film, art, audio and video festivals in the world dedicated to showcasing work by Indigenous screen creators, the festival has been going strong for two decades. Providing a network of support and a stage for varied and compelling works from Canada and around the globe, this important organization offers an opportunity for audiences to experience the variety and scope of contemporary Indigenous directors, producers and screenwriters. Works represented reflect the rich diversity and expanding role of Indigenous content in the media arts in Canada and abroad. In addition to the Toronto festival, this philanthropic organization is also responsible for the annual ImagiNATIVE Film & VR Tour providing access to film and video, community engagement activities and youth workshops across the country. Original and groundbreaking, this organization works throughout the year presenting indigenous-made work to audiences in communities both large and small embracing innovation in their cutting edge use of virtual reality media, digital games and installations in order to advance their mission of bringing these stories and these voices to as large and diverse an audience as possible.

In addition to its role as an unparalleled worldwide voice in Indigenous media arts, the imagineNATIVE Film Festival is a charitable organization with a commitment to fostering greater understanding of Indigenous peoples and cultures through on-going professional development programs, events, and group discussions.

Monsoon’s Participation

Monsoon Corporate Gifts was approached by the Toronto based film festival – with a challenge. They wanted a very special piece that would capture the essence of this unique celebration. Given the formidable reputation of their prestigious organization and the importance of their 20th anniversary, we had to rise to this occasion by offering a uniquely beautiful product of superb and enduring quality.

We entered our product planning phase with enthusiasm and great creative inspiration in the form of a gorgeous selection of Alanis Obomsawin’s original artwork. As one of the world’s most highly respected Indigenous directors, Obomsawin began her career with the National Film Board of Canada in 1967 as a film consultant. With a filmography consisting of more than 50 films including the powerful documentaries “270 Years of Resistance” (1993) and “The Incident at Restigouche” (1984) – such a notable and courageous artist, quite simply inspired us to deliver a fitting tribute both to the artist, and the occasion.

We submitted a number of potential custom scarf designs and in consultation with the festival we ultimately narrowed the field to a selection of three scarves that captured the true essence of the event. After some discussion of the merits of fine linen vs a 100% silk fabric option, the festival opted for a 26” x 26” digital print on an elegantly soft 100% silk. The final product surpassed every expectation and the scarves were very well received by festival organizers and their attendees.

We are very pleased to share this glowing review of our collaboration with ImagineNATIVE.

During the 2019 imagineNATIVE file + media arts festival, three limited edition silk scarves were produced featuring the art of noted filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin. The scarves were beautifully produced and of great quality. It was a lovely way to honour one of our most celebrated Indigenous filmmakers.
